For many dental patients, the thought of having a root canal is unsettling, to say the least. But the fact is that root canals are very common procedures and are often the best way to save an infected tooth that can’t heal on its own. Dr. Castillo would like to assure her Boerne, TX, patients that root canal therapy is nothing to be frightened of and, in fact, this endodontic procedure can usually be completed with no discomfort for the patient whatsoever.
How to Know if You Might Need Root Canal Therapy
In some rare instances, a patient might require root canal therapy without experiencing any symptoms at all. But those situations are not common. The majority of people don’t realize they need a root canal until the affected tooth has already developed an infection and abscessed, which can be very painful. Here are some symptoms that might indicate you need root canal therapy:
- A toothache that is very severe and gets worse when you bite down on the tooth
- A tooth that is suddenly sensitive to hot and cold food and drinks
- Gum tissue around a certain tooth that is swollen, tender, and or has a sore
- A tooth that has turned dark
If you experience one or more of these symptoms, contact our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment with Dr. Castillo
What’s Involved in Root Canal Therapy
After the patient is given dental sedation, root canal therapy can begin. The procedure involves Dr. Castillo removing infected pulp and nerves from the inside of the tooth, then cleaning and sealing off the tooth. In some cases, Dr. Castillo may recommend that a crown be placed over the affected tooth to provide additional protection.
