Here at Complete Dental Studio, Dr. Vo, Dr. Alghadban, Dr. Burceag, and the whole team are passionate about helping you and your family feel informed and empowered when it comes to your orthodontic treatment, and knowing how to handle dental emergencies is a big part of that. Luckily, true dental emergencies are relatively rare, but let’s get into it!
What Counts as a Braces Emergency
Even with excellent care, braces occasionally need a little attention between visits. The good news is that true orthodontic emergencies are rare, and most problems can wait a few days or be managed at home with a few simple tools. The key is knowing what requires a call to your orthodontist and what you can safely handle on your own.
Broken or Loose Brackets
Brackets can loosen if you bite into something hard, sticky, or crunchy, or even from normal wear over time. When this happens, you might feel the bracket move along the wire or rub against your cheek. It’s not usually painful, but it can be irritating if ignored.
If the bracket is still attached to the wire, try sliding it back into its original position and covering it with orthodontic wax to protect the inside of your mouth. Avoid trying to twist or reattach it yourself, as that can damage your braces.
Even one loose bracket can affect how your braces work. Give Complete Dental Studio a call so we can secure it properly and keep your smile progressing on schedule.
Poking or Dislodged Wires
A loose or poking wire is one of the most common sources of braces irritation. It can happen when your teeth shift or if a bracket loosens. You might notice the wire rubbing against your cheek or gums, creating small sores or discomfort.
If it’s mild, use the back of a spoon or clean tweezers to push the wire into a more comfortable position, then cover it with orthodontic wax. This will keep it from poking until we can make adjustments.
If the wire breaks or bends significantly, don’t try to fix it at home. Clip it carefully only if it’s causing severe pain, then contact our office. Wires apply precise pressure to guide your teeth, and a quick repair helps avoid any setback in your treatment.
Persistent Pain or Soreness
A little soreness is expected after new braces or adjustments—your teeth are moving, and that pressure means progress. The tenderness typically fades within a few days, but there are easy ways to stay comfortable: rinse with warm salt water, eat soft foods, and use wax or mild pain relief if needed.
However, if discomfort lingers beyond a few days or seems to be getting worse, it’s worth checking in. Persistent soreness can signal a bent wire, an irritated spot on the gums, or an appliance that needs fine-tuning.
We’ll take a look, make adjustments if needed, and ensure your treatment remains both comfortable and effective.

What You Can Handle at Home
Not every braces mishap requires an emergency visit. With a little know-how, you can keep things comfortable and stable until your next appointment.
Use Orthodontic Wax
Orthodontic wax is the simplest fix for irritation from brackets or wires. A small piece pressed over the area acts as a cushion between your braces and the soft tissues of your mouth. You can reapply as needed throughout the day, especially after meals.
Rinse With Warm Salt Water
A gentle saltwater rinse (half a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water) soothes sore spots and promotes healing. Rinse for about 30 seconds, then spit. It’s safe, easy, and helps prevent irritation from turning into ulcers.
Stick to Soft Foods
After an adjustment or small repair, choose foods that won’t strain your braces: mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies, and pasta are all good options. Avoid hard or sticky foods until any discomfort subsides to prevent damage or irritation.
When to Call Right Away
While most problems can wait for your next visit, some situations require prompt attention to protect your teeth and appliances.
Severe Pain or Swelling
If you experience intense pain, swelling, or signs of infection such as redness, bleeding, or a fever, be sure to contact our office immediately. These symptoms may point to a deeper issue that needs professional care.
Injury to the Mouth or Jaw
If you suffer trauma to your mouth, teeth, or jaw, such as a sports injury or fall, call us right away. We can evaluate the condition of your braces and ensure no damage interferes with your bite or tooth movement. If there’s heavy bleeding or suspected fractures, seek emergency medical care first.
Swallowed Appliance Parts
If a wire, bracket, or rubber band comes loose and you think you’ve swallowed or inhaled it, stay calm but seek medical help immediately. Once you’re safe, let Complete Dental Studio know so we can replace or repair your braces as soon as possible.
Our team is here to help you stay comfortable, safe, and confident, whatever your smile throws your way.
