Minimally Invasive Fillings

For many years, dentists had only once choice for filling material: silver amalgam. But now, thanks to advancements in modern dental technology, The Dentist can offer their patients another option: tooth-colored composite fillings. Although silver amalgam is an extremely durable material, it does have some disadvantages. The first, and most obvious, is that it is silver. And, unfortunately, that silver color can turn dark after a certain number of years. Composite fillings, on the other hand, can be made to match the shade of your natural teeth. In addition to their esthetic appearance, they are minimally invasive fillings because the tooth-colored composite material adheres to natural teeth much easier than amalgam. This means that more of the patient’s natural tooth can be preserved. For our Boerne, TX, patients, minimally invasive fillings mean less drilling!

More Information about Tooth-Colored Fillings

Although there are a variety of composite filling materials in use, typically the material is made from a mixture of plastic resin and silica filler. This means that composite fillings are extremely strong and long-lasting. And unlike silver amalgam fillings, which contains trace amounts of mercury, composite fillings contain no mercury whatsoever. Combine those advantages with the fact that tooth-colored fillings are virtually undetectable by other people and are minimally invasive, and you can see why this is such a popular option for so many of our patients.

The Process Involved in Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Although working with composite material is different than amalgam, the procedure is just like getting any other type of filling. The Dentist begins by removing existing decay, then cleans the tooth surface and applies a composite material that has been made to very closely match the color of the patient’s natural teeth. But because the composite material is so much better at adhering to the tooth surface, The Dentist can save more of the natural tooth. From the patient’s perspective, that means less drilling time.
