Dr. Alghadban and other periodontists treat gum-related issues in their patients. Recent studies show that nearly half of adults in the U.S. suffer from some form of gum disease, and that percentage is much higher for older adults over the age of 65. You can’t have healthy teeth without healthy gums, and periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in dental patients. Gum disease has also been linked to other more serious health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Gum Disease Symptoms
Unfortunately, many people may have gum disease without even knowing it. Symptoms in the early stages of the disease can be hard to detect, which is why it’s so important to visit our office on a regular basis for oral exams and professional cleanings. But there are some warning signs that you may be experiencing either the early or advanced stages of gum disease, including the following:
- Gums that are sore, swollen or red
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss, or even when you eat hard food
- Sores on your gums
- Loose teeth
- Teeth that are separating
- Receding gums (gums that are pulling away from your teeth)
- Bad breath that is persistent
- A change in your bite
- A difference in how your dentures, partials, or dental bridge(s) fit
